Pessimism In Poetry
Nida Fazli writes:
Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammil Jahaan Nahin Milta
Kahin Zameen To Kahin Aasmaan Nahin Milta
Very true. The perfection is nowhere to be found in this world and everyone lacks someting or the other.
But does that mean we should stop craving for The Ultimate?
And why is it so that most of our Poets write on the topics related to sadness and despair?
Maybe pessimism has a more lasting poetic effect. Maybe most of the poets write when they are down and out. Maybe they feel good after venting their frustration. Maybe they just like it the sad way.
But should we not look beyond the now and the here? Should we not attempt to trace the rays of hope in the darkest moments of our existence? Aren't poets expected to be the beacons of hope for the more ordinary mortals who read them, adore them and even follow them?
The song is still one of my most favourites songs but I like the following lines from Faiz Ahmed Faiz more:
Dil Na-ummeed To Nahin, Nakaam Hi To Hai
Lambi Hai Ghum Ki Shaam, Magar Shaam Hi To Hai
Don't they say that dawn follows the darkest moments of night. Amen...
